#34894 Introduce Yourself

Hi! I've been lurking the masseffect2faces site for ages and today found out it was revamped into this awesome new site. So cool to finally have user accounts and stuff.

Hi there. First I want to say: Great site, great idea, this place looks amazing.

The reason for the post: It seems the main site really pushes things in terms of load times. By far loading the main page takes up more time than it should (and probably more than you want) and affects the rest of the browser, this occurs on both Chrome and Firefox. This might be a case by case issue. My machine is only a couple years old, but is somewhere in the mid-tier range for gaming computers. If this machine is having trouble loading the site, I can only imagine how lesser or older machines run on there.

It's not a problem for me yet, but you'll probably get a lot of not so nice people coming on here being not so smart about things. Just doing you a solid (I hope) while I figure out the whole character submit stuffs, which so far is pretty nice. Keep up the good work!

#35043 Stressful loading

Options are not working for me either. And I'm still getting logged off randomly.

Personally, I think this site is great, but there is way too much stuff happening. The site is laggy and somewhat difficult to navigate. I preferred the old site even if it didn't have all these cool functions... that said, i love simplicity myself, so there is that. But it'd definitely be good to weight the necessity of these neat tricks vs. the user experience. The fog & image transitions being optional is a good step as soon as you get it working for everyone, but it might not be enough for those people who haven't yet registered and are just checking the site out.

I, at least, would prefer a simpler, more static site that'd load quickly and work well.

She is the best female Shepard I've ever seen. Sexy and doesn't look like a doll at all. And this is the problem with almost every nice female Shep ever made. This one looks seriuos as female Shepard should. 5 stars from me!

I've just added a new "options" icon near the search bar that allows you to disable both the animated fog and the full page image transitions.

Disabling those should speed up the site quite a bit. I will be adding more options to this dialog as they come to mind.

You need to be logged in to change them but then they will be remembered and tied to your account. I've also just fixed (I think) that annoying bug that keeps logging you out when you switch pages. So hopefully these two changes make navigating the site that much better for a lot of people.

these options do not work for me. i am logged in at the site but these options still dont work and the site is extremely laggy for me im not sure what to do i cant really navigate the site

Hey thanks a lot for the feedback!

Yes.. I totally realized from the get-go that this site was going to be pushing the limits.. just look at the amount of animations and large size graphics it's using. This is a case of me satisfying me with lots of bells and whistles which is what I like. As a programmer it's also a ton of fun to be slapping on all these different features and functionalities. It all comes at the cost of expensive resource taxing for anyone with a slower computer. I am now realizing that it also costs a lot of money to have everyone download 4MB of javascript lol... but this will only become a problem once and when the site becomes way more popular.

I will try to optimize where I can of course.. I always am mindful of tricks to decrease the loading. I cache heavily but once I implement reverse-proxy caching through Varnish it'll speed up quite a bit I imagine. I'm also thinking of simply adding an "options" panel where you all can easily turn on/off the more taxing features such as the full page background transitions and the animated fog at the top. Yea I think I'll do that... this way people with slower computers can immediately take advantage of faster loading without removing features that I happen to quite like.

Anyway there's so much more I want to add to the site but right now as life would have it I am stressed for money and had to shift my focus a bit before I go full reins on this project again. But either way expect new features and bug fixes to keep trickling down.
